Not Your Mother's Author

Tina Moss is a writer of urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and romantic suspense. She lives in NYC with a supportive husband and alpha corgi, though both males hog the bed and refuse to share the covers. When not writing, she enjoys reading, watching cheesy horror flicks, traveling, and karate. As a 5'1" Shotokan black belt, she firmly believes that fierce things come in small packages.

Undead and Unwed - MaryJanice Davidson A book with a corgi--albeit a cameo part--and a small ninja (she defends Betsy so she qualifies) vampire named Tina and a scene in which they're trapped in The Pit, not a pit, THE Pit. It's like MJ looked into my dark dreams and spit it out on paper.

I saw MJ speak at a conference years ago and have adored her ever since. I knew if her writing was even half as clever and funny as her keynote speech, I'd be hooked. She does not disappoint.

Love, love this book! So fresh. So different. Betsy, our undead heroine, is a fashionista, ex-secretary gone dead. She's the quintessential modern woman with a lot of sass and a killer shoe collection. Fighting bad guys and taking the vampire crown was never her life--or death--dream, but she's handling it as best she can, while trying to maintain some normalcy in her new dead life. With human sidekicks like Marc and Jessica plus the little ninja vamp, Tina (yes, I'm rooting for her), she's ready to take on the challenge--sorta--of staking a claim for her right to live (die?) a regular life (death). Well, as soon as she sorts out the vocab. ;)
The Dragon Empire - Heather McCorkle Grendar is officially my new favorite dragon. He's the ultimate underdog. Picked on from the egg, too shy to tell the girl he loves how he feels, and constantly bullied by an overgrown brute of a dragon, you'll be rooting for Grendar from the first page. As he grows and matures throughout the book, I found myself cheering with his every victory and sighing over each defeat. If you've never read fantasy before, this is the book to introduce you. And if you're a fantasy fan, welcome the newest star of the genre, Heather McCorkle.

4.5 stars!
Dark Slayer - Christine Feehan Finally, a true warrior woman + an ego-less Carpathian hunter = a true equal pair. My favorite of the series.
Rise of a Rector (Channeler, #3) - Heather McCorkle Wow! I just finished reading this morning, and I am in shock. Heather McCorkle has grown so much as a writer and a storyteller since the first book. While I loved The Secret of Spruce Knoll and Channeler’s Choice, the third novel in this trilogy absolutely blew me away.

Eren Donovan is a channeler–a person able to use the Earth’s energy for fighting or healing purposes. She is fast, strong and smart. But her mixed heritage of Mayan and Irish blood has pegged her as “other” amongst her kind. Add to it that she is the first channeler in hundreds of years able to use both sides of her power (healing and fighting) as well as a Rector (leader of a society) and she is truly made to feel an outcast. However, finding another like her, Aiden and bonding with him has made it all worth it. As young as they are, they’ve connected with their society—Eren’s cousin, Fane, and best friend, Caitlin. Nothing can break the bonds of friendship between these four. Now, they must face a coming Apocalypse that will destroy…everything.

McCorkle gives us non-stop action from beginning to end. The interactions between Eren, Aiden, Fane and Caitlin are real and heartwarming. I believe you’d be hard pressed to find any reader not wanting to be a part of this group. Loyal and caring friends, plus an epic love between Eren and Aiden, ramp up the emotions to uncharted heights. The enemies are all too close. Whenever one of these characters was in danger, I felt the fear and agony right along with them.

My only disappointment is that this is the last book. Bring me a Fane and Caitlin spin-off, please!

*Full disclosure: While I consider Heather a friend in the writing community, I was not asked by her to give this review. This is purely 100% my feelings toward the book.
Front Page Fatality - LynDee Walker You have to love a heroine with a penchant for designer shoes--the eBay way! Nichelle is an ace reporter looking to climb her way to the top, but when she investigates a case where the line between the good and bad guys blurs, she'll uncover more danger than losing the latest virtual bid. With an intriguing mystery that keeps you guessing, a heroine that keeps you cheering, and a fast paced plot that keeps your heat racing, Front Page Fatality is a major win!
Visions of Heat - Nalini Singh Only two books into the Psy-Changeling series and I'm already addicted. I love the world that Singh's created here. The machine like Psy with their "Silenced" emotions, remind me of a cross between Star Trek's borg and vulcan. The Changelings are primal, raw and full of emotion. All it takes is a bit of that heat to bring these Psy out of their shells and it is a fun cat/mouse game to read. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Channeler's Choice - Heather McCorkle Eren's story continues in Channeler's Choice. She's discovering what it means to be a channeler along with being a living Mayan legend and working out her intense relationship with hero, Aiden. The relationship between Eren and Aiden is electrifying. I love the closeness between these two characters as well as their friendships with secondary characters, Fane and Caitlin. Everyone should have friends like these two. The scenes describing the channeler powers are nothing short of magical. I cannot wait to see where this story goes next!
Magic Slays - Ilona Andrews Phenomenal! This series keeps getting better. Love the parent-child, teacher-student relationship between Kate and Julie. Can't wait to see how Julie evolves and continues to grow. Kate is also changing and allowing more people into her heart: Curran, Andrea, Derek, Doolittle and even Aunt B. The overall arc is leading to a showdown with Kate's father. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the end. And love the smoking Curran too!
The Laughing Corpse - Laurell K. Hamilton Solid 3.5 stars for me. I'm not sold on Anita yet, but she's growing on me.
Obsidian - Jennifer L. Armentrout 4.5 Stars. ROSWELL fans, here is the alien fix you've been missing. Daemon is Max and Michael rolled into one steamy green-eyed package. His hot and cold attitude keeps Kat on her toes and makes for chemistry that is sizzling. I read this book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down from the opening page. It is YA, but can easily compete with adult books in the paranormal genre. Cannot wait for the sequel!
The Turning - Jennifer Armintrout Torn on this book. Think it's a solid 3.5 stars for me. I liked the characters, but the heroine, Carrie, drove me a little batty with her flip-flopping between the "good" guy and "bad" guy. I'm also not crazy about the overall vampire mythology in this book. Found the sire bond on the creepy side. That said, the world building is solid, the plot well constructed, and the characters complex. I'll be picking up the next book.
Hexed - Ilona Andrews, Allyson James, Yasmine Galenorn, Jeanne C. Stein Read only the first story: Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #4.5). Rating based on that story.
The Bite Before Christmas - Lynsay Sands, Jeaniene Frost Read only "Home for the Holidays" in Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series, book 6.5. Give it four stars for a fun story.
Slave to Sensation - Nalini Singh I'm usually picky about giving out five star reviews, but I couldn't find anything I didn't like. Lucas, alpha leopard, had the perfect blend of hot, steamy male mixed with protective instincts and understanding hero. Sasha, the psy heroine, plays to the reader's sympathies without going over to damsel-in-distress territory. And the side characters are brilliant. Cannot wait to get to the Hawke book! Bring on the wolves. I'm hooked.
Insurgent - Veronica Roth Rating: 4.5

I kept going back and forth over 4 or 5 stars, so I'm splitting it down the middle. I loved DIVERGENT. I had high expectations for INSURGENT, which is why I'm floundering on the rating. It is a phenomenal book, great adventure and intriguing ending. For better or worse, I hold Roth to a higher standard than other authors because she's set the bar that high for herself.

My main gripes was that it doesn't recap enough of what happened in DIVERGENT for a sequel. It had been some time since I read the first book and found myself a little lost with the second. The heroine, Tris, also seems to encounter situations that don't necessarily advance the plot, but put her in bad circumstances for the sake of action.

These two points, however, is me nit-picking. Overall, I found the book highly engaging. I read it on my commute to and from, and never wanted to put it down. Very excited for book 3.
